Have you consider a product akin Dataset Pipes, but for the Cloud!
Here is one scenario;

Ubuntu 9.10/10.4 support private clouds (Eucalyptus) to be created and managed locally and also to interface with public clouds (Amazon ECS).

todsn / tocloud
fromdsn / fromcloud

These facility would enhance/augment the 'Multi-protocol File Exchange Gateway' you have advocated.
